Fresh Rhubarb Harvest: Our First Shipment of the Season from Fujimi, Japan

Image
English | 日本語 Good morning. Today is a special day—our first shipment of the season. As always, I harvested the rhubarb as usual, but I couldn't help feeling both excited and a little nervous. This is the garden at 4:40 a.m. The air is cool and slightly crisp. Rhubarb field before harvest After harvesting, the rhubarb was promptly washed, dried, and trimmed so that only the beautiful red leaf stalks remained. After weighing, each bundle was carefully packed into a dedicated bag. I then displayed them at the rhubarb sales booth. It was a completely new and rewarding experience. I left the store hoping that customers would enjoy them. This first shipment consisted of just two bags. Although the quantity was small, I took great care in preparing each one. Rhubarb display at the sales booth The rhubarb I grow (approximately 530g per bag, 702 yen including tax) is available at Tateshina Jiyu Noen Haramura Store. Although my production is small, I have a policy of shipping o...

From Garden to Jar: Making Homemade Red Rhubarb Jam with Freshly Harvested Rhubarb

Image
English | 日本語 Hello everyone. Today is Sunday, and I made homemade rhubarb jam using the first freshly harvested red rhubarb I have ever picked. This rhubarb was, Stored in the freezer for 5 days in the harvested state (approximately 15 cm long stick-shaped pieces). Then, it was thawed in the refrigerator for 1 day. On the day I made the jam, I quickly chopped it into 1 cm cubes (when cutting it with a kitchen knife, a considerable amount of red-colored juice comes out.). Granulated sugar was added, and it was chilled in the refrigerator for another 2 hours (here, I do not stir it after adding the granulated sugar.). The ingredients are 510g of rhubarb cut into 1 cm cubes, 240g of granulated sugar, and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. The containers are one 150g-capacity jam jar and one clean glass food storage container. First, I boiled the jam jar and cap for about 10 minutes to sterilize them (Images ①, ②, and ③). ①Boiling sterilization of the jam jar and cap ②Remov...

Rhubarb Harvest, Sorting, Washing, and Freezing: Preparing for Jam Production

Image
English | 日本語 Good morning, everyone. The time for harvest has finally arrived. Arranging all of the tools and supplies needed after harvest proved to be extremely challenging. I had wanted to write an article about that process as well, but time passed by in the blink of an eye. Since this was my first experience, things were quite hectic, but I am gradually regaining my composure. This marks the first step toward creating safe food through a process that will become more sanitary and efficient over the long term. I will continue to proceed carefully and diligently without letting my guard down. Now, let me go back to last night. All of the equipment and tools used for preparation—including the kitchen sink, drain, trays, and knives—were thoroughly cleaned in advance and disinfected with a spray of sanitizing alcohol. In addition, I used a freezer, cutting board, knife, trays, towels, colander, and cleaning sponge that were newly purchased exclusively for rhubarb and kept separa...

When Is Rhubarb Ready to Harvest? Growth Update and Harvest Tips from a Home Garden

Image
English | 日本語  Good morning. This week, I began preparing for the rhubarb harvest. Early this morning, I went out to the garden to check on the condition of the rhubarb and other crops after the rainfall that has continued since yesterday. I had been wondering since last week whether it was time to harvest, so I was feeling a bit excited. It looks like mowing the grass can wait a little longer. Rhubarb patch nearing harvest time The plants look very healthy. There are several guidelines for determining the ideal harvest time for rhubarb. Let's take a look at them one by one. The edible stalks are generally considered ready when: The base of the stalk is about 2–3 cm or thicker The stalk reaches a height of about 30–40 cm or more Since my garden is located in a highland area where growth tends to be slightly later than in lower elevations, the harvest season typically falls between late May and July. Rhubarb nearing h...

How My Vegetable Garden Survived Typhoon No. 6: Rhubarb, Adzuki Beans, and Storm Protection

Image
English | 日本語  Good evening, everyone. How was the impact of Typhoon No. 6 (Chami) in your area? I can only hope that no damage was caused. Typhoon No. 6 approached the Kanto-Koshin region, where my garden is located, with strong intensity and an accompanying storm-force wind zone from June 2 to June 3. Rain continued to fall from the night of June 2, and by the early morning of June 3, it had turned into heavy rainfall. As a result, I was concerned about the effects of strong winds and heavy rain on the garden. However, by around noon on the same day, both the rain and wind had stopped, and by around 2:00 p.m., patches of blue sky had begun to appear. Conditions in the garden after Typhoon No. 6 (Chami) approached This was the condition inside the garden at around 6:30 p.m., and fortunately there was no impact from the typhoon. I was a little concerned about the possibility of trees in the background being blown down, but that worry appears to have been unnecessary. Con...

Adzuki Bean Transplanting and Deer Protection | Preparing Seedbeds with Soil Solarization

Image
English | 日本語 Good morning. Today’s main tasks are the usual weeding, transplanting newly grown adzuki bean seedlings, and disinfecting the soil in seedbed MA. In the early morning, the temperature is 20 degrees, making it a comfortable environment for working. Rain is forecast for the afternoon. In seedbed RL, the wasabi greens are reaching their peak growing season. After weeding, I immediately harvested some and shared them with friends. Since they are organically grown, I can give them away with confidence. Condition of seedlings sown in seedbed 【RL-A11】 on 2026/03/07 Meanwhile, in seedbed CW, broccoli leaves have started to emerge. Since they were grown directly from seed, they have adapted to the surrounding environment and developed their leaves naturally. They give a strong impression. Their characteristic thickness and deep leaf color make them easy to distinguish from surrounding weeds. From this stage onward, I need to pay close attention to insect feeding damage b...
