How My Vegetable Garden Survived Typhoon No. 6: Rhubarb, Adzuki Beans, and Storm Protection

Good evening, everyone. How was the impact of Typhoon No. 6 (Chami) in your area? I can only hope that no damage was caused.

Typhoon No. 6 approached the Kanto-Koshin region, where my garden is located, with strong intensity and an accompanying storm-force wind zone from June 2 to June 3. Rain continued to fall from the night of June 2, and by the early morning of June 3, it had turned into heavy rainfall. As a result, I was concerned about the effects of strong winds and heavy rain on the garden. However, by around noon on the same day, both the rain and wind had stopped, and by around 2:00 p.m., patches of blue sky had begun to appear.

This was the condition inside the garden at around 6:30 p.m., and fortunately there was no impact from the typhoon. I was a little concerned about the possibility of trees in the background being blown down, but that worry appears to have been unnecessary.

The raised seedbed remained intact without any collapse, and the rhubarb looks vigorous and healthy. I was slightly concerned about the mud that had adhered to the stalks, but I do not think it will cause any problems.

The adzuki bean seedlings, which still have thin stems and were planted rather shallowly, were my greatest concern this time. This was because the upper seedbed is surrounded by agricultural plastic sheeting, and I had expected that the concentrated rainwater falling onto the plastic would flow directly down onto the adzuki beans in the lower bed. Fortunately, that concern turned out to be unnecessary.

And here is the agricultural plastic sheeting located above the adzuki bean seedlings. It remained secure because I had placed a considerable number of stones on top of it. I always take great care when handling it, especially when securing it in place.

This time, there was no damage in the garden from Typhoon No. 6 (Chami). However, I will need to take measures against insect feeding damage that often occurs after heavy rainfall. Perhaps I should apply natto water after all. It is something I am still considering.

Well, that's all for today.
