Garden Inspection After Heavy Rain: Checking Rhubarb Growth, Repairing Raised Beds, and Monitoring Blueberries (July 22)

Good morning. From yesterday evening through the night, we experienced heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms. This is the time of year when sudden downpours and lightning become more frequent.

I keep a close eye on the movement of rain clouds every day as I carry out work in the garden.

As a result, it looks like I will be able to resume harvesting and shipping around late September.

Garden conditions this morning (July 22)

This is my inspection of the garden after the heavy rain.

I carefully check the growth of each rhubarb plant one by one. I also inspect the growing conditions by making sure there are no standing puddles and that none of the raised beds have been severely eroded or collapsed.

Due to the heavy rain, soil has been washed away from the raised beds, making small stones much more noticeable. In addition, patches of grass left behind after mowing are beginning to stand out. It looks like these beds will need some minor repairs.

These are the rhubarb plants that were divided and transplanted into their new raised beds. Since the leaves are still small, a relatively large amount of soil appears to have been washed away. I will carefully restore these beds.

These are the newly constructed raised beds (CW and RL), where rhubarb divisions were recently transplanted. The heavy rain has washed away some of the soil, leaving small stones exposed. I will carefully repair these beds.

This is the only blueberry plant that has produced fruit. I tasted one berry, but it looks like it will be a little while longer before the berries are ready to be picked. This blueberry plant has been growing here for about one year since it was transplanted.

Most of the blueberry plants in the garden died and produced neither leaves nor fruit. After removing them by the roots, I put the space to other uses. Nothing in this garden goes to waste.
